Pleasant Run’s Prospect Falls destination will get a collective public art piece marking it as a WECAN neighborhood gathering place. Local artist Jude Odell has been working with community members to design and fabricate a mosaic column that will creatively illustrate the waterway and future butterfly habitat.
Over the past 4 years, Pleasant Run Waterway Committee has worked to build a welcoming space for residents and trail-users at the intersection of Prospect St and Pleasant Run Parkway North Drive. There is now a spacious shelter with picnic tables where visitors can to the water flowing over the rocks nearby.
But residents envisioned more than just a convenient place to pause. Odell got involved with the Pleasant Run Waterway Committee two years ago and thought that art pieces in this space would draw people from the community to the waterway as a destination for socializing and relaxation.
“The purpose is really to allow people to see their community differently and have pride and ownership,” says Odell. She has held two events at which community members participated directly in the creation of the column, most recently a glazing party where volunteers brought color to mosaic tiles representing plants and butterflies. The art piece will be installed later this fall or early in the spring.
