Pleasant Run

Pleasant Run runs approximately 27 miles across east and southeast Indianapolis. The waterway begins on the far east side just south of 38th Street and Franklin Road and flows southwest until it flows into the White River. ROW is focused along Pleasant Run from Sherman Drive down to Madison Avenue which includes the Southeast Quality of Life Plan community.

Pleasant Run Initiatives

 

Spruce Bridge Destination

After three years of community planning, crowdfunding, and problem-solving, there are now two beautiful plazas and a Great Blue Heron sculpture at Spruce Bridge by artist Patrick Mack, providing a site for reflection and education along Pleasant Run.

Barth Avenue Destination

This multi-faceted waterway destination planned and implemented by the committee most recently hosted the Wind and Water Festival in partnership with SENSE Charter School and Big Car Collaborative.

Prospect Falls Destination

Committee members worked with Prospect Falls neighbors and local artist Jude O’Dell to co-create a symbolic mosaic column, along with native plantings as part of the Keep Indianapolis Beautiful GreenSpace program.

Christian Park Reclamation

With the help of the committee, Christian Park is  visioning  big after invasive cleanup, native plantings, and a new bridge. A community survey is underway in English and Spanish.

Historical Facts
  • Garfield Park, located along Pleasant Run and its tributary Bean Creek, was the first official park built in Indianapolis.
  • Pleasant Run’s route through the Twin Aire neighborhood includes the former site of a coke and manufactured gas plant in operation from 1909 to 2007 by Citizen’s Energy Group which employed area residents. The site will now house the new Community Justice Campus.

  • Represented by the Southeast Congress, neighborhoods along Pleasant Run including Christian Park, Twin Aire, Prospect Falls, Fountain Square, Bates-Hendricks, and Garfield Park, have come together to make the Southeast of Indianapolis more beautiful.
  • Destinations at Prospect Falls, Barth Ave, Spruce Bridge, and newly-cleared green space in Christian Park are sources of pride for Pleasant Run neighborhoods and serve as gathering spaces to connect to the waterway.
