This month, ROW recognizes Kris May for stepping up in a big way as a relatively new ROW volunteer. Since July, Kris has been involved in multiple committees as a professional and resident, currently serving as a member of the Pleasant Run Waterway Committee and the Education Element Committee.
May is a landscape architect with HWC Engineering and has always been interested in how people interact with their environments. “When I worked for Indy Parks at Garfield Park, I became concerned about the health of Bean Creek, as kids were playing in it, but the stream was not safe to come into contact with,” says May.
In graduate school, May learned about storm water management practices and stream remediation and applied these concepts to the streams in Garfield Park as part of his thesis.
“When I learned about ROW, and the work that the organization does, I decided to find a way to donate some of my time and knowledge to help get people more connected to their local waterways,” May says.
All of ROW’s efforts are people-powered by volunteers. Kris May is an excellent example of how to bring insightful energy to both Waterway and Element committee work.
