This month, ROW recognizes Near East Area Renewal (NEAR) for spearheading engaging events and supporting small businesses along Pogue’s Run waterway. NEAR is a community development organization whose mission is to develop community as they create great places for neighbors. Connecting residents and small businesses to the local waterway is an important part of this work.

As a member of ROW’s Pogue’s Run Committee NEAR’s Economic Development Director Susan Vogt organizes dynamic events that highlight the waterway as a community asset and bring awareness to the the local economic vitality in Near Eastside waterway neighborhoods. By participating in the Connectivity Committee, NEAR advocates for multi-modal transportation options and enhancements on Indianapolis’ greenways.

This past Fall, NEAR organized the successful Pogue’s Run Bike Tour, bringing neighbors and Indy cyclists along the proposed Pogue’s Run Trail to Pogue’s Run Art and Nature Park, a created wetland that supports wildlife and prevents flooding in the area. This event also introduced riders to local businesses along the way and through refreshments after their trek.

You can join ROW, NEAR, and waterway neighbors in the upcoming Pogue’s Run Photo Contest! Those ages six-infinity are encouraged to submit two images to [email protected] by July 15th for a chance to win cash and gift cards and to participate in a special exhibition for First Friday August 2nd.

ROW thanks Near East Area Renewal for actively engaging residents with Pogue’s Run and looks forward to more fun waterway events to come!
